INSTRUCTIONS:  Copy the following in your notebook.

THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE / CONTINUOUS

·         Use the present continuous to talk about something that is happening right now.

I ’m studying for a test.

We ’re listening to music

·         To form the present continuous, use the present tense of the verb be + -ing form of the main verb.

What are you eating?

I ‘m eating a sandwich.

·         For verbs that end in –e, replace the –e with –ing form by replacing the –e with –ing

have      =   having                                        take  =  taking

·         If a one-syllable verb ends in a consonant, a vowel, and a consonant (CVC), double the last consonant before adding.  –ing

sit         =       sitting                                      get    =    getting


THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE vs. THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE / CONTINUOUS

FORM:
            Sandra stretches every day.                         Sandra is stretching right now.

We use the simple present to talk about things that people do all the time or again and again.

I run three times a week

We use the present progressive to talk about things that are happening right now.

She’s running now.


NEGATIVE


Use do and does plus not and the base verb.

I don’t watch television every day
He doesn’t study grammar every day.


Use am, is or are plus not and the –ing verb.

I’m not watching television right now.
He isn’t studying grammar at the moment.
QUESTIONS

Use do and does plus the base verb

Do you watch television every day?
Does he study grammar every day?

Use am, is or are plus the –ing verb.

Are you watching television right now?
