Part 1


Instructions: 

 

Copy the statement in the notebook and the exercise attach in the folder with guide 1, 2, 3, 4.

As you remember we learned about the past tense of regular verbs in guide 3 and in guide 4 learned about irregular verbs in past.  So now you are going to learn the grammar in past tense.

Negative Form

·         For negative statements in the simple past, use did (as the auxiliary like do/does in present, but it is in past) not  + the base for of the verb.

They didn’t like the movie.

ü  Notice that the verb is in present, because the past is in the auxiliary. 
                                       
YES/NO QUESTIONS

·         The word order in Yes / No questions is:
Did  +  subject  +  the base form of a main  + complement

                                   they    

 

ü  Notice that the auxiliary Did is the same for all the subject pronouns.

·         Use did  or didn’t in short answers.

Did she eat lunch?                                        Yes, she did.
Did they go to the sports complex?               No, they didn’t


INFORMATION QUESTIONS

·         In information questions about the subject, the word order is:  Question word  +  the simple past form

·         In other information question, the word order is:

Question word  +  did  +   subject    +   the base form of a verb  +  complement  +  ?

c)       Did they go the Spain last year?
d)      Yes, they did.   No, they didn’t.
e)       Where did they go last year?


0)  Carlos /  study  /  French

a)      He studied French
b)      He didn’t study French.
c)      Did he study French?
d)      Yes, he did.   No he didn’t
e)       What did he study?

ü  Notice that the verb in past is only in the affirmative form.  In the other forms is in present.

3)                                           My cat  /  sleep  /  on the sofa.

4)                                           Charles  /  buy  / a new car.
